Terrible!

Warning: this is a sad tale. Our previous gas provider, Micro Oil, was acquired by Ormonds. Since that time, we have experienced a notable decline in service. We are supposed to be on an "auto-fill" program, one in which the company stops by regularly and fills our tank as needed. Micro Oil always did a great job of keeping our tank filled, but unfortunately, Ormonds doesn't -- we're always having to check the tank and call them and even after we call they take their sweet time getting here. Since Ormonds took over in 2009, we've run very low on gas on several occasions and even run completely out once.

With record-low temperatures expected in the coming week, we checked the tank over the weekend and found that it was very low, so we called Ormonds on Saturday and left a message. No one ever called back. We finally got someone on the phone this morning (Monday, and unfortunately President's Day, with snow/sleet predicted and a state of emergency declared by the governor). The employee at Ormonds said they would be out to fill the tank, but it's after 5 p.m. now and they haven't shown up. The employee hung up so quickly today that there wasn't a chance to ask her why we saw their truck drive right down our street last Tuesday and pass by our "auto-fill" house without even slowing down, much less taking the time to turn in the driveway, check the tank, and pump some gas in it so we wouldn't be in the fix we're in today.

We are very dissatisfied, since we need fuel not only to heat our home but to prevent frozen pipes and costly repairs. If Ormonds doesn't really offer "auto-fill," they should make that clear to their customers so we can all start checking our tanks regularly and calling well in advance when we need a refill (or perhaps we could just switch to a company that will provide decent customer service!).

Although we suspect they will be cranky and uncooperative about picking up their tank, we are seriously considering getting rid of Ormonds after the heating season is over and choosing a more reliable company to provide a tank and handle our account. We've also discussed buying our own tank so we will be free to call any gas company we want when it needs filling instead of being stuck having to buy gas only from whatever company provides our tank. Although many folks don't know it, North Carolina gas consumers who don't own their tanks (and the majority don't) are not permitted to purchase their gas from any company but the one that provided their tank. Yes, I know that sounds weird, but it's true. So choose wisely, fellow citizens, or you might get stuck with an empty tank, a company that shows up when they get around to it, and the frustration of not being able to just call a different company and have them cheerfully welcome your business and serve your needs.
