In the mid '70s, Malcom "Smiley" Powell started a company on South Main Street in Akron called, "Summit Appliance". After being trained by a friend in the locksmith trade, he changed the company name to, "Summit Key and Appliance". Realizing that small appliance repair was soon to be an obsolete trade, he focused solely on the lock and key business. Summit Key and Appliance became A-1 Key service. Smiley remained active as a locksmith until he had a stroke in 2001. He sold the business to his son, Dave, who had started his own company in 1984 called Security Safe and Lock. Today, Dave and his two sons run both companies out of a single shop in Green.
