Do not Stay Here

Approximately 1 year ago, my boyfriend and I were on a Route 66 road trip. We had driven the west side, the year before and was driving the east from Chicago to the mid point, that year. We road trip a lot and are used to staying in road side motels, so were not expecting deluxe accommodations. We stopped in Rolla for the night and checked into The Best Way Inn, the sign said free HBO and $29.99 a night. They charged me $45.00 and no HBO. We asked for a smoking room, when we got to the room, it had a no smoking sticker in the window, so we went back to the front desk and asked again for a smoking room. The female at the desk, said we could smoke in it, they only had to put stickers up to follow the law. Being on the road all day, my boyfriend went straight to the bathroom, while I looked to see why one of the lights wasn't working. I saw the lamp was not plugged in. There was only 2 lamps and the room was very dark. I searched for an outlet, and finally found it behind the mattress. The working lamp was barely plugged in and the other plug in the outlet was burnt, so I went to push it back in, and sparks flew. I yelled for my boyfriend, but he was still in the bathroom. I then noticed the working lamp cord was bent bad at the plug and there were exposed wiring. I turned that lamp off and unplugged it, rep lugging the one that wasn't plugged and did not push the mattress back, flush to the wall, thinking a spark could ignite the mattress. I looked around the room and noticed the smoke alarm had been disconnected and just sitting on the counter. The bedding was stained, the pillow cases and pillows looked to have blood stains. I was talking to my boyfriend, while he was in the bathroom, saying that this place doesn't look to safe. As he came out, we heard an altercation outside, and there was a guy hustling for money and what appeared to be drug deal happening. At that point we knew we had to leave, we agreed to load our jeep in one trip and go get a refund. While driving around, saw another drug transaction. The female at the desk refused to give us a refund, stating we had been there an hour. We were there about 30 min to 45 min, from the moment of check in. I told her that, and she said something about video cameras to verify we were there an hour. We were scared and wanted to get away, so after then acting like she didn't understand English, we just left without the refund. I then remembered they had my personal information on a card, so we went back, to avoid future fraud. She said she couldn't give the info card back to me, because of hotel records, which I asked why?? We weren't staying there. I told her everything that we had experienced and that I would be contacting the BBB. Once home in Louisiana, I did contact the BBB for that area and filed a complaint. After several attempts for them to contact the Best Way Inn, they FINALLY agreed to refund my $45, but stated that we left a used condom and the bed was messed up. Like really?? We drove from southern Louisiana to Missouri to have sex?? But whatever, I didn't care, if that made them feel better, fine, as long as I got my refund. I never got my refund, I worked with the BBB up there for several months. They stopped responding to the BBB. If I wasn't 2 states down, I would have filed a civil suit, just for the point of it all. We live in a country with safety regulations and laws, this establishment chooses to not abide those laws and scam people. We have stayed in bad motels, we have stayed in scary places, but this one was the only one we actually left and went pay $120 to stay at a better hotel across the interstate. If you chose to come to our great nation, by all means, welcome. My grandfather immigrated to America from Italy, and worked hard to build a life and family here. But if you come here, please abide by the laws and safety regulations that are in place and stop the false advertisement and scamming. Some may think it's only $45, but it's the principal.
