Gift card balance refused to honor

When Big lots was getting close to their store closing in Crossville I went in to buy some sale priced items. Ater filling my cart I went to pay using my balance of 88 dollars and change when I noticed a sign saying gift cards are not valid effective a few days before I entered the store. The manager said it was out of her hands and nothing she could do. What does that mean? I use gift cards all the time with many retailers and every card says there is no time limit and the card is the same as cash. So my daughter took my card and called the proper channels seeking a refund for my balance but was told the company has erased all info on gift cards and will not honor my balance. my daughter told them she believes that is unlawful. I have been a faithful customer of Big lots and hope the people who are opening the stores again will credit me with my 88 dollar balance of my 100.00 gift card I bought from Kroger's supermarket. Thank you for any help in this matter. I have always had good service with Big lots but this has lowered my rating with them. Al Byrnes
