As a freshman at the University of California, Berkeley in the early 1960s, Douglas Key worked with a professor who was awarded a Nobel Prize for the discovery of photosynthesis. Although generally awarded only to upper classmen, Dr. Key was granted a summer Fellowship to study experimental biology in Worcester, Massachusetts.
