Soryu Karate-Doh curriculum includes instruction in kihon(basics), Kata(forms), and kumite(sparring). Within the Kata instruction we discuss bunkai(application) of each Kata and how it may relate to kumite(defense and offense). We treat Kata as a means to practice individually and not as an Absolute of ones ability to defend themselves. We believe that Kata is the opportunity to discover the individual self and to challenge the self in an effort to gain, and maintain a mental, physical, and spiritual self. We treat Kumite, again, as an opportunity to discover ones self in a safe and conditioned environment. As a student progresses in their individual development(growth), each student has the opportunity to demonstrate their skill through examination; hence, rank promotion.Our Soryu lineage is Frank Selvera, Paul Chapa, Steve Besa( American Soryu Karate-Doh), Joe Alvarado(Soryu Karate Institute), Michio Koyasu(All Soryu Karate-Doh Federation), and Kanken Toyama(All Japan Karate-Do Federation).
