We should all be as prepared for the unexpected as those Thunder Rats in 3rd platoon!THUNDER RATS were part of I-Troop, 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. Of the 4 combat platoons, 3rd platoon stood out as a rowdy group of cavalry scouts; an unruly and undisciplined bunch of soldiers who were very effective in the field. There was no depiction of what a Thunder Rat was. However, in 1989, Staff Sgt. Steven Ruch decided his platoon needed a mascot so he designed the Thunder Rat character. Sgt. Ruch and the Thunder Rats went on to engage in the 1st Coalition Offensive in Desert Storm against the Iraqi in 1990. 1st Sgt. Ruch was in the Army Cavalry and retired after 22 years of courageous service.
