The only control that we truly have is the ability to choose our reactions to things that happen to us. We may try to control the circumstances in our lives, but there are many elements that we cannot control including the actions of others, the thoughts of others and the timing of events in our lives. When people try to control the uncontrollable, they may just feel continual dissatisfaction when their internal story of what should happen does not match what actually happens. This dissatisfaction may contribute to feelings of worry or anxiety, which can lead to a greater perceived need to control one's life circumstances.
