At Midwest Prairies we subscribe to the concept of ecological health. Ecological health is defined as an ecosystem that is diverse in floral and faunal species; includes multiple age classes of representative species; and is capable of withstanding disturbances like wind and fire. As the Native Americans did for thousands of years, we typically work with natural processes such as fire, selective harvesting or thinning, and by spreading the seeds of desirable plants. However, in the modern age of invasive species, we frequently must use herbicides and powered mechanical equipment to jump start the process.
