Around 1917, Edward Shea, an Irish immigrant, moved to Rochester from DuBois, a small mining town in northwestern Pennsylvania. With him came his wife of over 30 years, Anna, and six of their nine grown children with their spouses. All but one of their children were to follow Edward to Rochester within five years. The Sheas settled in the area around East Avenue and Union Street, in the neighborhood that would later be demolished to make way for the Inner Loop. Soon after their arrival, the Shea Family Bake Shop opened in this same building on East Avenue. It was opened by Edward's son-in-law, John Bliss, and Edward's son George.
