Former Resident's Review of Shepherd of the Valley

As a former Ohio-Psychologist who worked at local nursing homes and hospitals, as well as a former Resident of Shepherd of the Valley, I give the Boardman facility a well-below average rating, especially due to its lack of benevolent leadership and overly-regimented administration of services. My voiced and written complaints were not taken to State-required Grievance Committee reviews that I requested. STNAs that I complained about being verbally insulting and generally disrespectful remained assigned to my room and never received any administrative leave, as required by the State. The Resident Bible Group that I led, as a certified Chaplain, was restricted and censored, even to the point that I could not use the words "hell" or "blood" because they are "too gory" for residents to hear. What about the blood of Jesus?

I was very disappointed that the Pastors there belong to a splinter group of the Lutheran Church of the Missouri Synod. They believe the Bible is with error when applied to modern society; gay marriage is acceptable biblically; and gay pastors are allowed to oversee their churches. These so-called 1.5 million evangelical Lutherans do not represent the 400 million evangelicals that believe in the inerrancy and infallibility of the Bible. Both from a secular and Christian viewpoint, Shepherd of the Valley has not lived up to its stated mission, as a corporation. The residents and most of the direct-service staff are spiritually healthier than the leadership, in my considered opinion. Shepherd's State ratings have definitely declined over the years, and it is because of not correcting deficiencies or problems when they exist. My numerous written complaints have been submitted to the Long-Term Ombudsman Program and the Ohio Department of Health for investigation. Hopefully, corrective actions will be truly taken to bring Shepherd up to at least average quality of overall services, not at its present well-below average, one-star State rating.
